Hello! My name is Thea, and I am the owner/breeder here at Spunky Rats Rattery & Exotics. I have owned rats since 2010. I started breeding in 2017. I’ve been doing extensive research on genetics, breeding, husbandry, and overall rat care since 2015.
I grew up around all different animals and I work in veterinary medicine.
I am always happy to help with any and all questions you may have! I love chatting, educating and learning about animals!
HOW WE GOT OUR NAME
When I first started breeding, I didn’t have a Rattery name. One of the first boys I produced, was named Spaz. He was my heart rat. He was amazing and I miss him so much :(
He was super playful and spunky(hence his name), so the Rattery is named after him, Spunky Rats Rattery.
This is him :)
ABOUT THE RATTERY
We are a closed rattery. This means that adopters are not allowed to enter the rattery. I do this for a few reasons; • By limiting the amount of people entering the rattery, the rats stay disease free and healthy. • The rattery is operated out of my own personal home. • I have many other animals living in my home.
Caging:
Our rats are housed in Critter Nations. We have 3 double critter nations, one for males, one for females and one for male/female grow outs.
We use the Prevue 528 cages for pairings and maternity.
We use bin cages for quarantine and as carriers, but also keep them on hand if extra caging is needed.
Bedding:
We use Walmart’s “Soft Pine Bedding” or TSC fine kiln dried pine.
Food:
We feed Oxbow adult rat food or Mazuri Rodent Breeder (depends on which one we can get ahold of at the time) with a high quality foraging mix.
